Hi Karoly
A vacation? Easy to say, impossible to do! It's very expensive to travel.
I have some news! I am going to be in a two-person show in Bucharest next November...at the National University of Art. I have been working on a book sharing project with a professor from there...we share a love of books and textiles. We have several books traveling back and forth between Romania and America. So far we have 7 or 8 books going, with more on the way. I make the paper and assemble the books and send them off, and they come back with artwork. I work on them some more and return them. It's been a wonderful collaboration. Daniele and I have become good friends and she has made all the arangements for our show. I am praying I get the Fulbright Scholarship so I can be present at the show's opening!
So, how is Spain? Are you working on any projects?

Buna zeia Karoly!
Good to hear from you! I I love your photos of your little one painting on the floor..do you remember what it was like to be so young and free! LOL So, I am busy applying still for the Fulbright...you know, it is very involved and takes a long time...I have to have it all together and ready to submit by October. It seems like a long time, but you have to find people in a foreign country who are willing to be your hosts...I have had much luck with that! I have become good friends with a professor of art at The National University of Art in Bucharest...and the school has sent me a letter of invitation...I will be able to use the school's facilities which is what I had hoped. SO, yes, 2010 seems a long way away, but time flies when you're having fun!!!!
WHat did you do in Transylvania? DId you have a show? Visit family?
I must tell you...I just finished ready a fantastic book...it is a true story about a man from Bucharesti who lived under communism...before ceausescu...he tried to leave the country via Yugoslavia in the 1950's and got caught...the story he told was terrifying...all the time he spent in prison...aweful! Just aweful. I wanted to tel you that the ROmanian people are so strong and resiliant...I have so much respect for you all. Amazing. Here in the USA people have no idea what it was like then...I am just learning and I am 50 years old! SO much of what we are told by our national news is crap...no one ever tells the whole story.
SO..my heart goes out to you and all the brave people of ROmania who stood up to opppression and fought to get their lives and country back! BRAVO!!!!

Be well and write soon,
Jo

Buna zeia Karoly!
I am learning to speak Romanian...it is a beautiful language! Thanks for writing. Yes...I wanted to let you know that your photos are coming out very elongated...although it is a very interesting composition! When time allows, send some new ones.
Today I received a nice letter of invitation from the Rector at the National University of Art in Bucharesti...she likes my community art project and has invited me to come...to use the studios there and to meet with the students. Very nice! If I am granted a Fulbright Scholarship, I would be going to Romania in September 2010. So, going to Transylvania wil be my first sight seeing trip..I would like to see all the medieval towns , villages, and of course, Bran castle where Vlad Dracul lived. I do like the dradula legends...I find them interesting but I do not find them romanitc like so many others here...I think it is a strange fascination. I know he is a hero in Romania...here he is viewed differently because Americans can be somewhat ignorant of other cultures.
I just finished a new community art project...I will be posting the photos soon..it is a quilt made out of tea bags...many people contributed to my project...my mom, many friends, and, of course, the other artists in my building.

Please stay in touch...take good care of your little one!
Jo

Dear Karoly,
Thanks for writing! I wanted to ask you about your photos...do you purposefully stretch them out like that or is it an upload error? I love the photo of the people in front of the building...it's very cool how the bodies are all elongated.
Thanks for letting me know about how "American" the Romanians have become. It made me laugh to think that they are more American than us! I have heard that many now speak English and that makes it easier for me to communicate with them.
If I do get to live in Europe for 8 months, I am planning to travel a bit, if I have enough money. Paris is one destnation...I know that they are rude, like you say...and even worse I know they hate Americans! (We hear all around the world that we are hated...this makes me very sad because most of us are very good, warm, and generous people) I will pretend to be Canadian...maybe they will have mercy! LOL I would like to travel to Italy too, and of course, I have a very good artist friend who loves in Amsterdam, who I will visit.
When I get to Romania I am going to visit Transylvania...what a beautiful place! You are fortunate to have been born there.
Wel, I must go for now..I have much work to do!
